The beginning of fall, or actually it’s still late summer. The stork nests are deserted. The birds fell silent. Delicate mists swirled over the We\u0142na river. The great Rostworowski Palace dominated the area. J\u00f3zef Wybicki was there often. But this story will not be about the palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On his way back from Vienna in 1772, he met Estera Wierusz-Kowalska here. She was fifteen at the time and lived with her mother in a palace. She was the niece of the lady of the house. Since then, Wybicki visited these parts more often. Eight years later, a politician, statesman, the then Poznan subordinate proposed to Estera and was accepted. So they stood on a wedding carpet at the local church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church was built in the 17th century in 1727 on a Latin cross plan. The temple is wooden, shingled and stands on a stone foundation. An interesting fact is 'Saturdays’ – covered porches for pilgrims. Churches of this type are found mainly in Moravia, Silesia and Ma\u0142opolska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guests and the bride and groom were probably charmed by the magnificence of the polychrome interior. The paintings were made by Adam Swach, a Franciscan from Pozna\u0144. The images seemed to come out of the walls. It smelled like wood. The sunlight coming through the high-placed windows created a unique and solemn atmosphere for wedding guests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wybicki family has passed. The hymn was left after J\u00f3zef. 'Poland is not lost yet’ and the memory of Esther in honor of whom her husband named the village of Esterpole he had bought. The church in Wle\u0144 has survived intact, where we can enter the eighteenth-century world, remembering great countrymen and sighing over the plight of the little ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
