Historia tego miejsca zaczyna si\u0119 w XIII wieku kiedy w roku 1274 przybyli na te ziemie cystersi i rozpocz\u0119li budow\u0119 swojej siedziby. Prace przygotowawcze trwa\u0142y 20 lat . Dopiero w 1300 roku rozpocz\u0119\u0142a si\u0119 w\u0142a\u015bciwa budowa za\u0142o\u017cenia klasztornego wraz z bazylik\u0105 i trwa\u0142a ponad 250 lat. Sama bry\u0142a katedry powsta\u0142a do roku 1400. Ko\u015bci\u00f3\u0142 i jego o\u0142tarz g\u0142\u00f3wny konsekrowane zosta\u0142y w 1476 r., za\u015b nawy boczne zosta\u0142y nakryte  dachem oko\u0142o roku 1500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Czas zwiedzania ko\u015bcio\u0142a to p\u00f3\u0142 godziny. Idziemy powoli zachwycaj\u0105c si\u0119 barokowym wystrojem \u015bwi\u0105tynni, ale wzrok jako\u015b mimowolnie kieruje si\u0119 ku g\u00f3rze. Pewnie taki by\u0142 zamys\u0142 architekt\u00f3w \u017ceby oczy wiernych kierowa\u0142y si\u0119 ku niebu, kt\u00f3re tu wyobra\u017ca przepi\u0119kne sklepienie. Dzie\u0144 jest pochmurny mimo to \u015bwiat\u0142o padaj\u0105ce przez ogromne okna wsp\u00f3\u0142gra z o\u015bwietleniem elektrycznym i tworzy niesamowit\u0105 atmosfer\u0119 kontemplacji. Zw\u0142aszcza p\u00f3\u0142nocne, rami\u0119 transeptu z pojedynczym, w\u0105skim, strzelistym filarem uznane zosta\u0142o za jedno z najpi\u0119kniejszych przestrzeni sakralnych w Polsce. Nie jeste\u015bmy przyt\u0142oczeni nadmiarem zdobie\u0144, wszystko jest harmonijne i stanowi sp\u00f3jn\u0105 ca\u0142o\u015b\u0107 zgodnie z surow\u0105 duchowo\u015bci\u0105 mistrz\u00f3w cysterskiej drogi, jak \u015bw. Benedykt, \u015bw. Robert z Molesme, czy \u015bw. Bernard z Clairvaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

W kolejnych stuleciach opactwo rozwija\u0142o si\u0119 i rozrasta\u0142o pojawi\u0142y si\u0119 gotyckie i renesansowe stalle , na \u015bcianach powstawa\u0142y coraz to nowe malowid\u0142a. Jednym z go\u015bci klasztoru w roku 1622 by\u0142 kr\u00f3l Zygmunt III Waza, a w 1626 Karol Gustaw kr\u00f3l szwedzki, a tak\u017ce W\u0142adys\u0142aw IV w roku 1633. Mimo potopu szwedzkiego bazylkia nadal si\u0119 rozwija powstaj\u0105 na przyk\u0142ad wspania\u0142e organy i przepi\u0119kna ambona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ci\u0119\u017ckie czasy nadchodz\u0105 dopiero wraz z pierwszym rozbiorem Polski 1772 roku. Ostateczna kasata zakonu nast\u0105pi\u0142a w 1823 roku. Na ratunek zagro\u017conej ca\u0142kowit\u0105 degradacj\u0105 Bazylice przysz\u0142a jednak dwa lata wcze\u015bniejsza decyzja papie\u017ca Piusa VII o po\u0142\u0105czeniu diecezji che\u0142mi\u0144skiej z archidiakonatem pomorskim. W roku kasaty zakonu kanonicy na sw\u0105 now\u0105 siedzib\u0119 wybieraj\u0105 Pelplin. Bazylika staje si\u0119 tym samym katedr\u0105, a rok p\u00f3\u017aniej sprowadza si\u0119 tu biskup che\u0142mi\u0144ski. Pierwsza i druga wojna \u015bwiatowa nie doprowadzaj\u0105 do upadku i zniszczenia opactwa. Podczas ostrza\u0142u wypadaj\u0105 okna, a bomba, kt\u00f3ra wpad\u0142a do wn\u0119trza nie wybuch\u0142a. Hitlerowcy wymordowali wprawdzie wszystkich zakonnik\u00f3w, ale budynki przetrwa\u0142y i teraz mo\u017cemy je podziwia\u0107 w niewiele zmienionej formie. Mo\u017cemy nadal w zachwycie spogl\u0105da\u0107 ku g\u00f3rze, ku sklepieniom i dalej w Niebo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old key creaked in the lock. The side doors of the main entrance to the cathedral basilica in Pelplin, dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, opened. Darkness, silence. A few more steps and… shock, delight! Feelings are mixed. I don’t know what to say. It is best to remain silent in this silence filled with the effects of the craftsmanship of old masters. The gaze immediately goes up. We look at the starry vaults as if they were a starry sky and admire the enormity of the building and the perfection of the Creator. It is the second largest brick, Gothic church in Poland with the largest wooden altar in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of this place begins in the 13th century when the Cistercians came to these lands in 1274 and started building their headquarters. The preparatory work took 20 years. It was only in 1300 that the actual construction of the monastery complex and the basilica began and lasted over 250 years. The cathedral itself was built by 1400. The church and its main altar were consecrated in 1476, and the side naves were covered with a roof around 1500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The duration of the church visit is half an hour. We walk slowly, admiring the baroque decoration of the temple, but our eyes somehow involuntarily turn upwards. This was probably the architects’ intention to direct the eyes of the faithful towards the sky, which here is represented by a beautiful vault. The day is cloudy, but the light shining through the huge windows harmonizes with the electric lighting and creates an amazing atmosphere of contemplation. Especially the northern arm of the transept with a single, narrow, soaring pillar was considered one of the most beautiful sacred spaces in Poland. We are not overwhelmed by excess decorations, everything is harmonious and constitutes a coherent whole in accordance with the strict spirituality of the masters of the Cistercian path, such as Saint. Benedict, Saint Robert of Molesme or St. Bernard of Clairvaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following centuries, the abbey developed and grew, Gothic and Renaissance stalls appeared, and new paintings were painted on the walls. One of the guests of the monastery in 1622 was King Sigismund III Vasa, and in 1626 Charles Gustaf, King of Sweden, and W\u0142adys\u0142aw IV in 1633. Despite the Swedish Deluge, the basilica continues to develop, for example, wonderful organs and a beautiful pulpit are being built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard times came only with the first partition of Poland in 1772. The final dissolution of the order took place in 1823. However, the Basilica, which was at risk of complete degradation, was saved by Pope Pius VII’s decision two years earlier to merge the Che\u0142mno diocese with the Pomeranian archdeaconry. In the year of the dissolution of the order, the canons choose Pelplin as their new headquarters. The basilica thus becomes a cathedral, and a year later the bishop of Che\u0142mno comes here. The First and Second World Wars did not lead to the collapse and destruction of the abbey. The windows fell out during the shelling, but the bomb that fell inside did not explode. The Nazis murdered all the monks, but the buildings survived and now we can admire them in a slightly changed form. We can continue to look up in delight, towards the vaults and further into Heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
