Cistercian Abbey in L\u0105d on the Warta River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various stories circulate about the abbey in L\u0105d and about the Salesian seminary there. Novices are afraid of the Land, because it is said that living there is hard. Ora et labora from morning to evening. We decided to see for ourselves what interesting things you can find there, what stories and secrets the old abbey hides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to records by the Warta River, in 1145 a grange of the monastery in \u0141ekno was established. It became independent in 1175. Thanks to the efforts of Mieszko the Old, monks from the Altenberg Abbey were brought here after 1193. Until the end of the 16th century, monks were recruited mainly from the Rhineland. W\u0142adys\u0142aw \u0141okietek and Casimir the Great were guests here. Of course, the Romanesque church where these leaders stayed no longer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, a baroque dome dominates the village. You can see it from a distance. The road leads through the undulating areas along the Warta River. But let’s get back to the story. 1331 was the year of the decline of the monastery. The Teutonic Knights plundered it. They ravaged the monastic property. They burnt down the farm buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the efforts of the General Starost of Greater Poland – Wierzbi\u0119ta of Paniewice, who was appointed by Kazimierz Wielki as the starost of Greater Poland, the abbey regained its splendor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 15th century, the estate was made up of 52 villages and 3 towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, L\u0105d lies on the sidelines of tourist routes. Nevertheless, the monastery prospers. Seminarians look after their estates. The monks show the visitors for a little donation. You can take photographs, ask questions, and visit and admire what is left to our times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Reformation, Zygmunt August ordered the election of a Pole as the next abbot of L\u0105d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jan Wysocki, the canon of Gniezno, became the abbot. The next ones are: Jan Zapolski of the Pob\u00f3g coat of arms and Antoni Miko\u0142aj \u0141ukomski of the Szeliga coat of arms,under whose reign the monastery flourished once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the second partition of Poland, the Prussians confiscated some of the monastery property. As a result of pressure from the tsarist government the abbey in L\u0105d was completely abolished in 1819.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard times have arrived not only for the country and for the monastic buildings but also for the monks themselves. J\u00f3zefa and Wac\u0142aw Gutowski, the local counts, inherited these lands and thanks to their efforts the church was taken over by the Capuchin Fathers. In the January Rising the abbot and the monastery played a significant role as a contact point, so after the fall of the uprising, the nuns ended up in Siberia. The buildings and grounds of the abbey were put up for auction in 1888 and purchased by the bishop of Kujawsko-Kalisz. At that time, a diocesan parish was established here, and in 1921 the monastery was taken over by the Salesians. War ravaged the congregation in L\u0105d once again. The Germans established a transit camp for clergy there. One of the inmates was Blessed Micha\u0142 Kozal, who died together with his confreres in Dachau. In the years 1941-45, the monastery served as the German Hitlerjugend unit. After the war, the clergy returned and the Salesian Minor Seminary remains here to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such lush and interesting history. It could probably be deepened by searching in the archives. You can soak it up while walking along the monastery’s alleys. Here, in the reliquary the heads of 54 martyrs are stored. The Cistercians of Altenberg brought the relics of the martyr St. Ursula and her companions. The heads are wrapped in valuable fabrics from the 13th century. The fabrics bear the coats of arms of medieval knights. It is not known why they were there. The puzzle is waiting to be solved. In addition, two golden spheres were discovered during the renovation of the monastery in the baroque helm roof. What treasures were found in them?
